Some of the best details in a home aren't the ones you notice right away. They're the ones that make a space feel complete. At Birchwood Construction Company, our craftsmanship doesn't stop with the home itself. With our own woodshop and paint shop, we have the ability to create custom pieces designed specifically for the spaces they belong in.

This handcrafted oak dining table is a perfect example of what happens when our two departments bring their expertise together. Tucked into a light-filled breakfast nook overlooking the home's natural surroundings, this table needed to do more than fit the space. It needed to complement the home's architecture, feel intentional, and stand up to years of everyday use. That's where our Master Craftsman, Ivan Cole, came in.

Working from our woodshop, Ivan handcrafted the table using a solid oak top and a custom base wrapped in oak. The design balances the natural warmth of the wood with a sculptural base that gives the piece its distinctive character. Oak was an ideal choice for this project. Known for its durability, beautiful grain, and timeless appeal, it's a material that works just as well in a contemporary home as it does in a more traditional setting.

Working with solid wood requires experience. Every cut, curve, joint, and transition needs to be carefully considered, especially when creating a piece that's as functional as it is beautiful. From shaping the tabletop to building and wrapping the custom base, Ivan brought each detail together by hand. Once the woodworking was complete, the table made its way to our in-house paint shop, where the McCaffrey Painting team took over.

Our McCaffrey Painting family members carefully stained and sealed the oak, bringing out the character of the natural grain while creating a durable finish designed to protect the table through years of daily use. Finishing a piece like this requires just as much attention to detail as building it. The stain needs to complement the wood, the finish needs to be consistent, and the final result needs to look as good up close as it does from across the room.

Having these capabilities in-house means our teams can work together throughout the process, maintaining the same level of care and attention from the first cut to the final coat. With the woodworking complete and the finish applied, the table was installed in its new home, where it now anchors a breakfast nook surrounded by natural light and views of Northern Michigan.
