2. Then we sand. Sanding refines the surface while maintaining the integrity of the grain. It’s a balance – smoothing without erasing the texture that gives the piece its identity. When done correctly, sanding prepares the wood to receive color evenly and intentionally, ensuring consistency throughout the finish.

3. Water popping is where the transformation begins to reveal itself. By lightly introducing moisture, the wood fibers rise, enhancing the grain pattern and allowing for deeper color absorption. It is a subtle step with a significant impact on the richness and depth of the final finish.

4. We used a stiff wire then to open it up. Using a stuff wire further accentuates the grain, creating dimension and movement across the surface. This technique draws out the natural lines of the wood, giving the finish a tactile quality that feels layered, authentic, and full of character.

5. Then we apply the base color. The base color establishes the overall tone. It’s carefully selected to complement the homes aesthetic while allowing the enhanced grain to remain visible. This step is not about covering the wood - it’s about enhancing what’s already there.

6. Next we seal it. Sealing locks in the base color and creates a stable surface for the next layers. It helps protect the wood while preserving the depth and clarity achieved throughout the earlier stages of the finishing process.

7. Then we used our second color which is a glaze. The glaze adds complexity and richness to the finish. This second layer of color settles into the grain and natural variations of the wood, creating depth, contrast, and a more refined appearance. It is often this step that gives custom cabinetry and doors their distinctive, handcrafted look.

8.  A final light sanding refines the surface before the final protective coat is applied. The final coat enhances durability while bringing all of the finish layers together, resulting in a surface that is beautiful, resilient, and designed to endure everyday use.
